RAFAEL NADAL'S COACH TONI CRITISICED FOR 'SEXIST' RESPONSE TO APPOINTMENT OF GALA LEON AS SPAIN'S DAVIS CUP CAPTAIN

Nadal's coach and uncle says it would have been preferable to appoint someone with experience of men's tennis as Spain's David Cup captain.

Rafael Nadal's coach has criticised the appointment of a woman as the captain of Spain's Davis Cup team, arguing there are substantial differences between the men's and women's games..

His comments have been labelled sexist by Spain's leading political parties,

Gala Leon, a former WTA player, became the first woman to be appointed captain of the country's Davis Cup team on Sunday, replacing Carlos Moya. "It is preferable that (the captain) is someone with a background in the world of men's tennis," Toni Nadal, Rafael Nadal's coach and uncle, told Spanish radio.

"I have nothing against her, I don't know what her capabilities are, and I hope she does her job well, but in theory she is a person that doesn't know men's tennis, because men's tennis isn't the same as women's tennis.
"The truth is that the men's game isn't the same as the women's game on the tactical level, not that one is better than the other."

In my opinion a woman can train a men's team. It's a little bit strange a woman training a men's team but she can do it. I think that Toni Nadal's comments are sexist and they aren't good to say that when you are a famous person like Rafa's coach.

  5. I don't agree, because it's too sexist. A women can perfectly train a men's team. The worst thing is that many people think that this is truth, that men's training it's better than woman's training. There's no difference between sports done by woman and sports done by men. I hope some day human mind change, so this kind of comments and thoughts will dissapear

  6. I think that this coment it's too sexist, a woman can trains a men's team because she doesn't have to know less than a men about sports. In my opinion, to choose a trainer for a team, we have to look the knowledge of the person about the sport instead of the sex, so I hate sexists people, especially with sports.

Gala León had been a good tennis player. She knows the world of the tennis and she had got some prizes, so it's a perfect candidate to the Spain team. Women can do the same things than men. Boys and girls can train the team if they are prepared to do it regardless if is she or he. The comment of Toni Nadal is very machist and I hope that he will change.

  18. I think the same as my partners. A women can train perfectly a men team. I have been playing tennis since 2010 and the girls plays as good as boys, and sometimes better. But maybe what Toni Nadal refers is that when a man grow up at the age of 25 (more or less) it can be more physical or stronger than a woman, it would be like another kind of game. The commentary of Toni Nadal is a little bit sexist, anyway she is not playing so it "doesn´t affect" to the players.

  30. I think the comment is a bit sexist, be a man doesn't means that going to be better or anything like that, women are not less, only that years ago they weren't engaged in these things or had these priorities; and even if is a man, he doesn't have to have more experience, that doesn't affect this; a person can be good regardless of gender and in this case Rafael Nadal's coach is giving bad image and selfishness on their part.

  33. I think that the comment of Nadal's uncle was silly because a man does not have to better understand the physical abilities of a man and the contrary. I think that this Toni Nadal isn´t right and a woman can train to a team form of men like a man can train a team form of women, for example Mico Margets was trainer of the women's team of Davis Cup during almost 20 years. Probably Gala León provides to the Spanish team the key to win the Davis Cup that is the thing that really matters.

I think that comment is very sexist because a woman is not only a woman, she is a person like a man, and I think that it doesn't matter if the trainer is a woman, the most important thing is that she must know how to train and tries to do the best in her job, because a man can have the same mistakes than a woman, and a woman can train or do anything better than a man.

And considering that most of the time, as coach says, game strategies are made in the locker room, would have many problems. However, something Nadal said in this article made me hold up and think: is it true that men’s tennis is different than women’s tennis? If it is, then a man would maybe be better for this job. I’m not saying I agree with him – his comment was obviously sexist –but I’m just deciding to give him a chance and believe he said that because he had a reason to and not because he was just acting really stupid. Anyway, women and men are equal in rights and are capable of doing the same sort of jobs and things. His comment was clearly out of place.
